Research
Referencing Essential Tool
Referencing allows you to justify what you've wrote about.
You reference to avoid plagarism (Taking other people's work and claiming it's yours)
What information is needed?
- Author Name
- Title of said source
- Date of publication
- Page number
- Volume and issue number
Why is it important?
To show the reader you've done the research.
To be a responsible scholar by giving credit to other researchers and acknowledge their ideas.
What to reference?
Facts,Figures, Ideas, Words, Theories.
When in doubt, be safe and cite your sources!
Harvard Reference
Parenthetical referencing system made up of 2 components:
Intext Reference & A Reference list.
Paraphrasing: Taking concepts/ideas from certain sources and writing in my own words (Taking something and putting into your own words).
- Keep the original meaning.
- Still reference it.
- Paraphrasing may be longer than the original text.
- Alternative of quotes.
- Useful for making notes from reading, note taking in lesson.
- Still need to use punctuation and grammar
When to paraphrase?
- To rewrite someone else's ideas without changing the meaning.
- to support claims in or provide evidence for your writing.
- To express someone else's ideas in your own words.
Summarising: Putting the main ideas into my own words but only the main points.
- Must reference.
- Does not match the source word for word.
- Reduce and condense text to its importance.
What to summarise?
- To outline the main points of some else's work in your own words without the details or examples.
- To include an authors ideas using fewer words than the original text.
Quoting: Taking something from something and repeating word by word, without changing any of it.
- Normally a short sentence.
- Match the source word for word.
- Must be referenced.
Use them to support what you're talking about.
When to quote?
- When the authors words convey a powerful meaning.
- When you want to use the author as an authoritative voice in your own writing.

Each of these sources helped me immensely as I was able to learn the history and evolution of special effects such as the substitution splice and early use of matte painting as well as how Star Wars set a new standard for special effects and how they were able to achieve such feats.
The sources were reliable as they contained references of the sources they used to write the books.

Box Office Mojo
Box Office Mojo was a useful resource as it allowed me to find out the gross for both Avatar and Titanic. It is a viable source to use as it is owned by IMDb which is also owned by Amazon.

development processes and explore the techniques used to achieve their status.

Uses & Gratifications Theory
3 things for this project (3 outcomes)
understanding of critical theories. Get the group powerpoint from people
11/12 - Research Page - Group Powerpoint research critical theory ( Narrative, Gender,Representation)
21/22 - Planning Page - Research into your topic. Reference Links etc. Analysis
- List your references and analysis them and talk about them
31/32 - Production Page - A 2000 word essay. Quotes, paraphrasing, summarising.
Harvard System References Min 15
Introduction & Conclusion
10/04/19 Summative Assessment
"This is limited work Oscar, you have produced an incomplete essay and no additional research into critical perspectives. You have unsuccessfully meet criteria 1.1/1.2 which ask for you to conduct research into critical perspectives in media, if you recall you were tasked with creating a PowerPoint on a chosen media theory and identify key theorists. To achieve this criterion include your group's presentation and that of your peers which an accompanying paragraph outline the theory in your own words.
You have identified a limited range of sources for your academic essays, all of which are from online articles. In your FMP, you will be required to conduct relevant research and you will need to use other channels - books, interviews, academic journals. What is missing is an evaluation of these sources. Sadly, you have only found seven sources here and many more in your bibliography. Thus you will be required to evaluate all your sources to achieve criteria 2.2 - consider how useful the information was when writing your essay and how valid are they?
Finally, you have produced a well written essay with appropriate use of academic conventions with quotes, citations and a comprehensive bibliography - Good work! Sadly it is only 1000 words and doesn't meet the 2000 word count, as a result it isn't very in depth and doesn't explore the topic in as much depth as i'd like. Revisit this and use your sources to explain how practical and CGI effects have developed and improved storytelling. in addition, ensure that you are summarising your findings at the end in a conclusion. "
Tasks:
1)Upload the class powerpoints and in my own words write about them
2)Include other channels of research ie: books, interviews and academic journals
3)Evaluate the sources.
4)Hit 2000 words
5)Use my sources to explain how practical CGI effects have developed and improved with storytelling.
